London Ambulance Service careers
Working for the London Ambulance Service is like nothing else. Whatever your role, you'll be making a life-saving difference for the communities we serve.
Working for the service
The London Ambulance Service provides medical support to those who need it, and our line of work is varied, with no two calls ever the same. From our frontline paramedics to our specialised divisions, the service is tailored to suit the needs of its patients regardless of injury or circumstance.
Employment with the London Ambulance Service is a unique opportunity. Our training programmes are designed to suit you and help all applicants, whether they hold prior medical experience or not, achieve the skills they need to help others. There are also plenty of opportunities for self-development, whether through joining one of our divisions and sub-divisions or applying for positions within command.
Where you could start
Everyone joins Ambulance Operations. Basic medical training is provided, and specialist divisions open to employed staff later on.

Emergency Responder
Attend a range of calls, focusing on injury responses and less critical incidents. Basic medical training is provided, and it is led by the Clinical Directorate.

Paramedic
Handle a wide variety of incidents after a specialised training programme led by the Clinical Directorate, with the chance to apply for specialist divisions.

Specialist divisions
Employed staff can apply for internal vacancies in the Hazardous Area Response Team and London's Air Ambulance.

Eligibility criteria
Standard eligibility
- You must be a British citizen.
- You must not hold an active service or Home Office blacklist.
- You must not have been dishonourably discharged from the service less than 1 month ago.
Returning staff
This applies to staff who received an honourable discharge from the service.
- Discharged less than 6 months ago: you are eligible for a fast track into your former position, with no examination.
- Discharged over 6 months ago: you will need to re-sit your final exam, which is based on your previous scope of practice (Paramedic or Emergency Responder). You can choose to downgrade your scope of practice. Failing the examination means you will be entered into the Clinical Directorate and complete the training scheme for your scope of practice.
Direct entry
If you have real-life medical experience or currently work in a medical profession, you may be eligible for direct entry. You will complete an examination that depends on your level of knowledge. For more information, create an inquiry ticket in our Discord.
Please do not create an inquiry ticket about direct entry if you do not have medical experience. It is very obvious in the examination, and it will result in a blacklist from joining the service in the future.
Frequently asked questions
If you have any further questions about the application process, create an inquiry ticket in our Discord server.
Can I have a criminal record?
A criminal record does not stop you joining the London Ambulance Service. Being in an organised crime group could result in disqualification. Our off-duty crime policy is set out in the service-faq channel in our Discord.
How do I apply?
Join our Discord server and use the application links there, which take you to your AppSystems application. Applications usually open on Mondays and close on Fridays, and are reviewed over the weekend.
What division will I join?
All students start in the Ambulance Operations division. Opportunities to apply for specialist divisions open regularly, but these are internal vacancies, so you must be employed to apply.
Why was my application denied?
The reason is in the message you receive through AppSystems. If you failed an eligibility criterion and believe that is a mistake, create an inquiry ticket.
Can I use AI in my application?
No. Using AI software, or any sign of plagiarism, results in an automatic denial and potentially a blacklist from applying to the service in the future.
